Korean Cooking Class

My husband brought me a ‘Korean Cooking’ class for my Xmas gift last year. I love cooking and baking classes as you can learn so much and have fun! Over the past year, I have been a big fan of Korean food due to me watching lots of Netflix K-dramas and they are always lots of scenes eating together and of course my favorite band is BTS!! I was so lucky last year to watch them at Wembley! It was the best show ever, such talented artists and so good at dancing!!

I did the class (3 hours) last month at the London Cookery School in Holloway Road. I had a great time, the class was very small and intimate with only 7 of us, our teacher was called ‘Ellie Chang’. She was fabulous, was really enthusiastic in teaching us the dishes and telling us the history and providing us advice and tips throughout the whole session. I have learned so much in this class and can’t wait to try it out on my family!

I have just looked on their website and they have changed their menu this month. So, I learnt to cook the following dishes: Kimchi Jeon (pancake), Dipping Sauce, Cucumber kimchi, Bibimbap with Beef and Black Sesame ice cream. It was great sharing the tasks amongst the groups ie chopping or frying and once cooked, we get to eat what we have cooked as our dinner and you get a chance to chat to the other people in the group. There was plenty to go around, I had to take mine home as I could’nt eat all of the bibimbap! All the food was delicious and so eye catching. It is mainly chopping everything up that requires the most time.

Interesting facts that I have learnt:

  • I didn’t realize that there are over 400 different types of Kimchi!! It’s a really process to make Kimchi.
  • Bibmi means mixing various ingredients and Bap means Rice.
  • Short grain rice is actually Sushi Rice.
  • Basic seasoning normally consists a combination of dark soya sauce, sesame oil, salt, sugar, black pepper depending what food you are preparing.
  • Korean meals always comes with a bowl of rice, soup and kimchi.
  • The dishes should be balanced and harmonious with colours, textures and flavours.
  • Koreans love sesame in their dishes and spring onions.
  • They serve their side dishes according to your social class. For instance, the King is served with 12 side dishes. Now, in modern times, there are only a few side dishes that families cook as it takes a long time to prepare all of them as you would eat rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner!!

If you are interested in the recipes, just message me! When I do cook the dishes, I will post the recipe.
